Ball State Head Football Coach Fired Midseason

For the first time in program history, Ball State fired a head coach midseason. In what was called in a release “a change in football leadership,”  Mike Neu was fired, ending his nine-year term as the Cardinals’ head football coach. According to Mike Neu’s contract, Ball State owes a $550,000 buyout, and according to the Star Press, he gets the full amount even if he lands another coaching job elsewhere.

Ball State Director of Athletics Jeff Mitchell told the media Saturday, just hours after the announcement of the firing, “Our world is a little bit complicated right now, in terms of all the moving parts associated with recruiting and the portal, the changes within the NCAA landscape,” Mitchell, quoted in the Star Press. “Once we got out of contention for bowl eligibility, taking into account the record and trying to chart a path forward, the opportunity to have extra weeks to assist with the search was helpful.” Mitchell also announced that offensive line coach Colin Johnson will serve as interim head coach for Ball State’s two remaining contests this season.
