Five Muncie men have been arrested in connection with an attempted break-in last week that resulted in the death of an alleged accomplice. The Star Press reports that 27-year-old William Joseph Smith has been arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery and attempted burglary. Police say Smith and Scott Gilliam tried to kick in a door at an apartment house when the occupant of that apartment, shot through the door with one of the bullets striking Gilliam in the head. Police have also arrested four more Muncie men alleged to have been part of the conspiracy.
