Contract OK’ed for cleanup at former GM plant

A $4 million contract has been approved to clean up contaminated soil at the site of a former General Motors factory in Anderson. The work will concentrate on a 1-acre Anderson site where officials say tests have found the carcinogenic solvent trichloroethylene, or TCE. Gary McKinney of the city’s Economic Development Department says work could start in December at the site on the city’s east side and take more than a year to finish. The (Anderson) Herald Bulletin reports the city Redevelopment Commission approved the contract, with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency covering the cleanup costs.
